On a November Saturday night in downtown Winnipeg, thousands of kids and adults clinging to steaming cups of cocoa gather at the city’s most famous corner. The annual Santa Claus Parade is the longest-running community event in Winnipeg, and one of the longest-running parades in North America.
First started by Eaton’s Department Store in 1909, four years after its success in Toronto, it has led the way for other notable holiday celebrations, like the Philadelphia Gimbles Parade launched in 1920 and the NYC Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924.
Block parties start at 4 pm. Parade starts at 5 pm.
