Unlike traditions that chase bold heat or fleeting trends, Iranian cooking builds flavour in layers. Its recipes have travelled through centuries of history, shaped by the Silk Road and preserved through generations of family tables. At Tehran Café, that culinary heritage finds expression in dishes rich with fresh herbs, fragrant saffron, dried fruits, citrus, slow-cooked meats and warming spices.

The unassuming exterior gives way to a dining room steeped in Persian culture. Artwork and cultural artifacts evoke the history of one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Comfortably unpretentious, the room’s occasional clutter lends it to the lived-in character of a family-run restaurant where first-time visitors are as welcome as regulars.

Bright with lemon juice and olive oil, the Shirazi salad combines finely diced cucumber, tomato, onion, parsley and mint in a refreshing introduction. Kashke bademjan follows with a richer expression of the cuisine, blending smoky eggplant with fermented whey and aromatic spices into a creamy dip whose earthy complexity lingers long after the first taste. Warm, house-made naan invites diners to scoop and savour every bite.

Persian cuisine reveals its greatest depth in khoresh, the slow-simmered stews that define its comforting heart. Fesenjan, one of Iran’s defining dishes, features chicken braised in a velvety sauce of ground walnuts and pomegranate molasses, striking an elegant balance of sweetness, acidity and richness. Gheymeh bademjan is equally satisfying, pairing tender beef and yellow split peas with tomatoes and dried lemon before being finished with meltingly tender eggplant. Every spoonful is layered, nuanced and delicious.

The kabobs showcase the kitchen’s  mastery of the grill. Lamb chops arrive beautifully charred, their smoky exterior giving way to exceptionally tender meat served with fragrant saffron rice, a grilled tomato and more warm naan.

Service is warm and knowledgeable, with staff eager to guide diners through unfamiliar dishes. Fruit-forward mocktails and a distinctive pistachio saffron milkshake round out the thoughtfully composed menu inviting introduction to Persian cuisine and  recipes that have endured for centuries.
