Long before tasting menus dominated the fine dining conversation, French restaurants established the blueprint for elevated dining. At Resto Gare, that tradition continues inside a restored 1913 St. Boniface train station where classic French cuisine, old-world romance and warm hospitality remain timeless companions. Since 1983, the beloved family-run restaurant has remained one of Winnipeg’s enduring destinations for celebrations, date nights and leisurely dinners meant to stretch long into the evening.
Guests can choose between the dining room, patio or retrofit train car. Stepping into the train car feels like slipping into another era. Plush velvet seating and elegant lighting cast the narrow carriage in a glow, evoking the glamour of luxury rail travel. The main dining room balances nostalgia with contemporary touches. Historic black-and-white photographs line the walls, dark wood floors anchor scarlet booths, and a white grand piano quietly commands the room. In warmer months, the patio becomes one of the city’s loveliest hidden gems.
Chef Lindsey Campbell remains faithful to classic French flavours with preparations of rich, comforting staples executed with confidence. Coquille St. Jacques pairs delicately seared scallops with buttery potato purée, lardon and mushrooms beneath a bubbling wine cream gratin.
Plats principaux arrive with warm focaccia and balsamic oil for dipping — a rarity in today’s dining scene.
The boeuf bourguignon showcases ultra-tender braised beef slow cooked in red wine with pearl onions, and mushrooms, delivering the deep satisfying richness that defines French country cooking. Confit de canard à l’orange balances crisp duck skin with falling-off-the-bone tenderness, brightened by a subtle citrus gastrique. Alongside, impossibly silky butter mashed potatoes absorb every last spoonful of sauce.
A dessert trolley eventually rolls tableside to tempt diners insisting they could not possibly eat another bite. Resistance quickly dissolves at the sight of sweet and silky maple sugar pie, a distinctly Canadian finale to an unmistakably French meal.
Though this station no longer sees hurried rail passengers, Resto Gare continues to transport diners somewhere far more romantic, if only for the evening.
